 Preventing Norovirus

Outbreaks of Novorvirus

can be caused by eating contaminated food or being in crowded close places where viruses can spread easily. (Cruise Ships for example) It can spread from sharing utensils, or food/beverages. Or from eating food that has been handled by an infected individual.

There is currently no vaccination available

If possible avoid areas where an outbreak has been reported, and wash your hands with hot soapy water and/or disinfect. Avoid using shared utensils. Wash fresh food (vegetables, fruit) throughouly.

Individuals preparing food

Need to strickly follow food handling rules, and should not prepare food if they have flu-like symptoms.
The only preventative measure than can be taken is proper food handling and hand washing by infected individuals.

Household tips

if someone becomes sick in your home:
  • wash clothing in hot water/machine dry
  • use the high temp setting of dishwasher
  • disinfect things like door knobs, remote control or other common devices

Duration

Individuals usually recover in 1-2 days.
